Camlann

 Camlann

Camlann is the third in a series of four 6" squares designed as a part of the Legends of King Arthur series.  Each of these squares will be named after a place associated with the Legends and will represent the phases of Arthur's journey:  birth, life, death, and eternity.

Representing Arthur's death, Camlann is the fabled battle in which Arthur and Mordred fatally wound each other.  The battle itself was apparently a costly one on both sides of the sword in which many fell.

This pattern, like the Legends themselves, is not for the faint of heart.  It is features INTERMEDIATE TO ADVANCED construction techniques.

Special thanks to the following Ravelry members for testing this square:

I appreciate the time and effort you put into testing this square and, in many cases, the entire series!

All yarns Hobby Lobby, I love this Yarn!

Note about selecting colors:  For the Celtic Colorway colors 2, 4, and 6 remain the same in all 3 squares.  This creates a nice unity and can be helpful in planning.

Hook Size/Gauge:

Using an H size hook I was able to obtain a 6” square.

Basic Terms/Abbreviations Used (US):

  • BPhdc – back post half double crochet
  • BPsc – back post single crochet
  • ch – chain
  • dc – double crochet
  • FPsc – front post single crochet
  • FPtr – front post triple
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • slst – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • tr – triple crochet
  • yo – yarn over

For reference ease, special stitches are defined in the rounds they are used in.  In-round notes are blue.

Beginning Loop:

With color A/1, ch 4.  Join with a slst to beginning ch – beginning loop made.

Round 1:

Ch 3 – counts as beginning dc.  (15 dc) in beginning loop.  Join with a slst to 3rd ch of beginning ch-3 and fasten off.  16 dc.

Round 2:

Join color B/2 with a standing sc in any stitch.  Sc in the next stitch,*(Hdc, dc, tr) in the next stitch, ch 3, (tr, dc, hdc) in the next stitch – shell made. Sc in the next 2 stitches.*  Repeat * to * 3 more times, omitting last 2 sc on final repeat.  Join with a slst to beginning sc and fasten off.  8 tr, 8 dc, 8 hdc, 8 sc and 4 ch-3 spaces.

Round 3:

You should have a set of 2 scs between each shell – in this round you will be working into these scs only and skipping all the trs, dcs, hdcs, and ch-3 spaces that make up the shells.

Special Stitch – Extra Large Extended mini puff – XLxmp – yo, insert hook into indicated stitch or space, pull up a loop – 3 LOOPS ON HOOK.  Yo, insert hook into same indicated stitch or space, pull up a loop – 5 LOOPS ON HOOK.  Yo, pull through 3 loops, [yo, pull through 2 loops] twice.

Join color C/3 with a standing dc in the 1st sc of any 2-sc set. XLxmp in the same stitch as join.  Ch 2, (XLxmp, dc) in the next stitch.  [Ch 4, pull your chain behind the next shell - skipping all stitches that make up the shell, (dc, XLxmp) in the next sc, ch 2, (XLxmp, dc) in the next sc] 3 times.  Ch 4, pull chain behind the next shell, join with a slst to beginning standing dc and fasten off, or alternatively, join with an invisible join as we will be back posting around this stitch in the next round.  8 XLxmp, 8 dc, 4 ch-2 spaces, and 4 ch-4 spaces.

Round 4:

Special Stitch – 2 Double Crochet Cluster – 2dc clstr -  Yo and insert hook into indicated stitch or space - pull up a loop.  Yo and pull through 2 loops – 2 LOOPS ON HOOK.  Yo and insert hook into same stitch or space – pull up a loop.  Yo and pull through 2 loops – 3 LOOPS ON HOOK.  Yo and pull through all 3 loops.

Join color B/2 with a standing BPsc around the dc before any ch-4 space. *Ch 3, (2dc clstr, ch 3, 2dc clstr) in the ch-4 space, ch 3 – corner shell made.  BPsc around the next stitch, ch 3, skip the next {XLxmp, ch 2, and XLxmp}.  Pulling your ch behind these skipped stitches, BPsc around the next dc.*  Repeat * to * 3 more times, omitting the last BPsc on final repeat.  Join with a slst to beginning BPsc and fasten off. 8 2dc clstrs, 8 BPsc, and 16 ch-3 spaces.

Round 5:

Special Stitch – puff – [Insert hook into same indicated stitch or space and pull up a loop, yo] 4 times – 8 LOOPS ON HOOK.  Pull through all 8 loops, ch 1 to close.  Closing chain does not count as a stitch for pattern purposes.

Join color D/4 with a standing dc in the first BPsc after any corner shell.  *Ch 1, puff in the ch-2 space from Round 3 and the ch-3 space from Round 4 together.  Ch 1, Dc in the next BPsc, (2 dc) in the next ch-3 space, ch 4, skip the next {2dc clstr, ch 3, and 2dc clstr}.  Pulling your chain behind these stitches just skipped, (2 dc) in the next ch-3 space, dc in the next stitch.*  Repeat * to * 3 more times, omitting last dc on final repeat.  Join with a slst to beginning dc and fasten off.  24 dc, 4 puffs, 8 ch-1 spaces, and 4 ch-4 corner spaces.

At the end of round 5, you will thread your clstr shells from Round 4 through the ch-3 spaces of your shells from Round 2, Jacob’s Ladder style.  Pull them so that your clusters come completely through the ch-space – see photo below.  To make this easier, I recommend shoving or sliding the dcs made into the ch-3 spaces before and after the shells toward the middle puff in order to expose as much chain as possible.

Round 6:

Special Stitch – Giant Puff – [Insert hook into same indicated stitch or space and pull up a loop, yo] 6 times – 12 LOOPS ON HOOK.  Pull through all 12 loops, ch 1 to close.  Closing chain does not count as a stitch for pattern purposes.

Join color E/5 with a standing sc in the first stitch after a ch-4 corner space.  Sc in the next 2 stitches, *sc in the next space, FPsc around the puff, sc in the next sp, sc in the last 3 stitches of side.  Hdc in the ch-4 corner space.  Ch 3 – working through the Round 4 ch-3 space and the Round 5 ch-4 corner space together – giant puff, ch 3.  Returning to Round 5 only – hdc in the ch-4 corner space again, sc in the next 3 stitches.*  Repeat * to * 3 more times, omitting last 3 sc on final repeat.  Join with a slst to beginning sc and fasten off, or alternatively join with an invisible join as we will be back posting in the next round.  11 stitches and 2 ch-3 spaces per side.  1 giant puff per corner.

Round 7:

Special Instruction – Shallow Post Stitches - For a more even look, work your back post stitches ‘shallow’, or at the very top of your stitches, just under the front and back loops and above the 3rd loop of your stitches rather than dropping beneath the 3rd loop and working around the post itself (see photo – hook entering stitch from back to front above the 3rd loop and arrow is showing where hook will exit from front to back above 3rd loop to complete the stitch.  Photo from different pattern).

Special Stitch – Front Post Double-Triple 2 Together - FPdbltr 2tog – Yo 3 times, insert hook from front to back to front around indicated stitch or space and pull up a loop.  [Yo, pull through 2 loops] 3 times – 2 LOOPS ON HOOK.  Yo 3 times, insert hook from front to back to front around the next indicated stitch or space and pull up a loop.  [Yo, pull through 2 loops] 3 times – 3 LOOPS ON HOOK.  Yo and pull through all 3 loops.

Join color F/6 with a standing dc in any ch-3 space just after a corner puff.  Dc in the same space. *BPhdc around the next 2 stitches, BPsc around the next 7 stitches, BPhdc around the last 2 stitches of the side.  (2 dc) in the next ch-3 space. Dropping to the Round 2 ch-3 space that has your 2dc clstrs pulled through it FPdbltr 2tog around the Round 2 ch-3 space before the clstr on the right and after the clstr on the left – see photos below. (2 dc) in the next ch-3 space.* Repeat * to * 3 more times, omitting last (2 dc) on final repeat.  Join with a slst to beginning dc and fasten off.  15 stitches per side. 1 FPdbltr 2tog per corner.

Round 8:

Join color G/1 with a standing FPtr around any corner dbltr 2tog.  (Ch 2, FPtr) around the same stitch.  *(2 dc) in the next stitch – don’t miss the first hidden stitch.  Hdc in the next stitch, sc in the next 11 stitches, hdc in the next stitch, (2 dc) in the next stitch.  (FPtr, ch 2, FPtr) around the next corner dbltr 2tog.*  Repeat * to * 3 more times, omitting corner sequence on final repeat.  Join with a slst to beginning FPtr and fasten off. 19 stitches per side. Photo right shown in Celtic Colorway C.
