Feathery fans, deco design, night clubs, pearls, and bobbed hair - this square was inspired by everything 1920's, and nothing says roaring 20's like jazz and gin.  This challenging square will have your hook dancing the Charleston!

Materials:

·       Size H/5 mm crochet hook;

·       Tapestry needle for weaving in ends;

·       Worsted weight yarns in the brand/color of your choosing.  I used the following colors –

A	Dark Denim - HLILTY
B	Sea Blue - HLILTY
C	Sungold - HLILTY
D	Antique Teal - HLILTY

Size and Gauge:

·       Using an H size hook I obtained a 12” square

Basic Terms/Abbreviations Used (US):

ch – chain                                                              FPhdc – front post half double crochet

For ease of reference special stitches are defined in the rounds they are used in.

Beginning Loop:

With color A, ch 4.  Join with slst to beginning ch – beginning loop made. Do not fasten off.

Round 1:

Ch-2 – counts as first dc. Dc, ch 1 in beginning loop.  [(2 dc), ch 1 in beginning loop] 7 times – 8 sets of 2 dcs.  Join with a slst to 2^nd ch of beginning ch-2.  Fasten off.  16 dc and 8 ch-1 spaces.

Round 2:

Special Stitch – Long Single Crochet (long sc) – insert hook in indicated stitch or space and pull up a loop.  Pull loop up to same height as the current round – 2 LOOPS ON HOOK.  Yo and pull through both loops.

Join color B with a standing sc in the first dc of any set of 2.  Ch 10, sc in next dc.  [Skip the next ch-1 space. Working in front of the ch-1 space, long sc into the beginning loop between sets of dcs.  Sc in the next dc, ch 10, sc in the next dc] 7 times.  Skip the next ch-1 space. Working in front of the ch-1 space, long sc into the beginning loop between sets of dcs.  Join with a slst to beginning sc.  Fasten off.  24 scs (including long scs) and 8 ch-10 spaces.

Round 3:

Special Stitch – Puff -  Insert your hook into the indicated stitch.  Pull up a loop – 2 LOOPS ON HOOK.  YO and insert hook into same stitch.  Pull up a loop – 4 LOOPS ON HOOK.  YO and insert hook into same stitch.  Pull up a loop – 6 LOOPS ON HOOK.  YO and pull through all 6 loops.  Close stitch with a chain.

Important – please note – the closing ch-1 on your puff does not count toward subsequent chains called for in the pattern.

Join color C with a puff in any long sc from the prior round.  [Ch 2.  Skip the next sc, skip the next ch-10, and skip the next sc.  Pull the ch-2 just made behind your ch-10 and puff in the next long sc] 7 times.  Ch 2.  Pull the ch-2 just made behind the last ch-10 and join with a slst in the space just before the beginning puff – see photo – yellow stitch marker shows space before puff.   DO NOT fasten off.  8 puffs and 8 ch-2 spaces.

Round 4:

Puff in the top of the puff – this is the space marked by the blue stitch marker in the photo above. Ch 1, puff in the same stitch. [Ch 2.  Skip the next ch-2 space.  Pull the ch-2 just made behind your ch-10 from Round 2.  (Puff, ch 1, puff) in the next puff] 7 times.   Ch 2.  Skip the next ch-2 space.  Pull the ch-2 just made behind your ch-10 from Round 2.  Join with a slst in to beginning puff.  Fasten off.  16 puffs, 8 ch-1 spaces and 8 ch-2 spaces.

Round 5:

Join color D with a slst in any ch-1 space between two puffs. *Skip the next puff. Twist the next ch-10 from Round 2 twice to the right.  Working through the top of the twisted ch-10 and the next ch-2 space from Round 4 together (dc, ch-1) 3 times.  Dc in same ch-10 and ch-2 space together.  Skip the next puff and slst in the next ch-1 space between puffs.  Skip the next puff.  Twist the next ch-10 from Round 2 twice to the right.  Working through the top of the twisted ch-10 and the next ch-2 space from Round 4 together, (hdc, dc, ch 2, dc, hdc).  Skip the next puff and slst in the next ch-1 space between puffs*.  Repeat * to * 3 more times, omitting last slst on final repeat.  Join with a slst to beginning slst and fasten off.  24 dc, 8 hdc, 8 slsts, 12 ch-1 spaces and 4 ch-2 spaces.

Round 6:

Special Stitch – puff -  See instructions Round 3.

Important – please remember – the closing ch-1 on your puff does not count toward subsequent chains called for in the pattern.

Join color E with a BPsc around any slst from Round 5 just before a (hdc, dc, ch 2, dc, hdc) sequence,  *Ch 2.  Pull your ch-2 behind the (hdc, dc, ch 2, dc, hdc) sequence and BPsc around the next slst.   [Ch 1, skip the next dc, puff in the next ch-1 space] 3 times.  Ch 1 and skip the next dc.  BPsc around the next slst*.  Repeat * to * 3 more times omitting the BPsc on final repeat.  Join with a slst to beginning BPsc and fasten off.  12 puffs, 8 bpscs, 4 ch-2 spaces and 16 ch-1 spaces.

Round 7:

Special Stitch – Double Crochet Cluster (clstr) -  Yo and insert hook into indicated stitch or space - pull up a loop.  Yo and pull through 2 loops – 2 LOOPS ON HOOK.  Yo and insert hook into same stitch or space – pull up a loop.  Yo and pull through 2 loops – 3 LOOPS ON HOOK.  Yo and insert hook in same stitch or space – pull up a loop.  Yo and pull through 2 loops – 4 LOOPS ON HOOK. Yo and pull through all 4 loops.  Cluster made.

Join color F with a standing sc in any Round 6 ch-2 space – be sure to keep your Round 5 stitches in front of your work.  Sc in same space as join.  *Skip the next BPsc, clstr in next ch-1 space – the space just before your puff. [Ch 2, skip the next puff, (clstr, ch 2, clstr) in the next ch-1 space] 2 times.  Ch 2, skip the next puff, clstr in the next ch-1 space.  Skip the next BPsc and (2 sc) in the next ch-2 space - be sure to keep your Round 5 stitches in front of your work *.  Repeat * to * 3 more times, omitting the last 2 sc on final repeat.  Join with a slst to beginning sc and fasten off.  24 clstrs, 8 scs and 20 ch-2 spaces.

Round 8:

You should have two sets of 2 clstrs per corner.  Join color B with a standing sc in any ch-2 space between two sets of 2 clstrs.  (Ch 2, sc) in same space as join – corner made.   *[FPsc around the next clstr, (2 sc) in the next ch-2 space] twice. FPsc around the next clstr.  Sc in the next sc, ch 8, sc in the next sc.  [FPsc around the next clstr, (2 sc) in the next ch-2 space] twice.  FPsc around the next clstr.  (Sc, ch 2, sc) in the next ch-2 space – corner made*.  Repeat * to * 3 more times, omitting corner sequence on final repeat.  Join with a slst to beginning sc and fasten off. 18 stitches and 1 ch-8 space per side.

Round 9:

Join color G with a standing hdc in any corner space.  (Hdc, ch 2, 2 hdc) in same space as join.  *BPhdc around first 8 stitches of the side, ch 2. Pull your ch-2 behind your Round 8 stitches and skip the next sc, ch-8, and sc. BPhdc around the last 8 stitches of side.  (2 hdc, ch 2, 2 hdc) in the next corner space*.  Repeat * to * 3 more times, omitting corner sequence on final repeat.  Join with a slst to beginning hdc and fasten off. 20 stitches and 1 ch-2 space per side.

Round 10:

Join color D with a standing sc in any corner space.  (Ch 2, sc) in same space as join.  *Sc in the first 8 stitches of the side.  Skip the next 2 stitches.  Pull your Ch-8 from Round 8 through the ch-2 space from Round 6 located directly below, Jacob’s ladder style.  Twist the ch-8 twice to the right.  Working through the top of the twisted ch-8 and the Round 9 ch-2 space together, (dc, ch 1) 3 times.  Dc in the same spaces together one more time.  Skip the next 2 stitches, sc in the last 8 stitches before the corner.  (Sc, ch 2, sc) in the next corner space*.  Repeat * to * 3 more times, omitting corner sequence on final repeat.  Join with a slst to beginning sc.  Fasten off. 22 stitches and 3 ch-1 spaces per side.

Round 11:

In this round you will be slip stitching in the 3^rd loop. Don’t make them too tight or your work might pull.  The 3^rd loop appears as a ‘bump’ at the back of your stitches – see photo if you are not familiar with this loop – the hook is going into a 3^rd loop and the yellow stitch marker is showing the location of the next loop.  We will be working our slsts into this loop.

Special Stitch – puff -  See instructions Round 3.

Important – please remember – the closing ch-1 on your puff does not count toward subsequent chains called for in the pattern.

Join color E with a standing sc in any corner space.  (Ch 1, sc) in same corner space as join.  *Slst in the 3rd loop of the first 8 stitches.  Ch 1 and skip the next 2 stitches.  [Puff in the next ch-1 space, ch 1, skip the next dc] 2 times.  Puff in the next ch-1 space, ch 1, and skip the next 2 stitches.  Slst in the 3^rd loop of the last 8 stitches of the side.  (Sc, ch 1, sc) in the next corner space*.  Repeat * to * 3 more times, omitting corner sequence on final repeat.  Join with a slst to beginning sc.  Fasten off.  21 stitches and 4 ch-1 spaces per side.

Round 12:

Special Stitch – Chain 2 Picot (ch 2 picot) – ch 2 and slst into the front loop and left vertical bar of the last stitch made (photo left: yellow highlights front loop and left vertical bar; photo right: hook inserted into front loop and vertical bar).

Join color C with a slst in any corner space.  (Ch 2, slst) in same corner space as join.  *Slst in the BLO of the next 7 stitches – don’t pull too tight.  Skip the next 2 stitches, ([dc, ch 2 picot] twice) in the next ch-1 space.  **Skip the next puff, ([dc, ch 2 picot] three times) in the next ch-1 space **. Repeat ** to ** one more time. Skip the next puff, ([dc, ch 2 picot] twice) in the next ch-1 space.  Skip the next 2 stitches, slst in the BLO of the last 7 stitches of side.  (Slst, ch 2, slst) in the next corner space*.  Repeat * to * 3 more times, omitting corner sequence on final repeat.  Join with a slst to beginning slst.  Fasten off.  16 slsts, 10 dcs, 10 ch-2 picots and 1 ch-2 corner space per side.

Round 13:

Join color B with a slst in the BLO of the 5^th stitch before any corner.  *Ch 4.  Pull the ch-4 behind the corner and slst in the BLO of the 5^th stitch after the corner.  You should have 3 slsts before your first dc of the side.  Working in front of these 3 stitches, and into the unworked FLOs from Round 11 directly below these stitches, sc in the first skipped FLO, hdc in the next skipped FLO, dc in the next skipped FLO.  BPhdc around the next stitch from Round 12 – which should be your first dc.  Post around the stitch directly below the picot made in the top – you will work all your post stitches in this round in the same manner – make sure your picots stay in front of your work.  BPhdc around the next stitch.  BPsc around the next 3 stitches.  Ch 2 – new corner made.  BPsc around the next 3 stitches.  BPhdc around the next 2 stitches.  Working in front of the next 3 round 12 stitches and into the skipped FLOs from Round 11 directly beneath them, dc in the first skipped FLO, hdc in the next skipped FLO, sc in the next skipped FLO.  Slst in the BLO of the 5^th Round 12 stitch before the next corner*.  Repeat * to * 3 more times, omitting the slst on final repeat.  Join with a slst to beginning slst.  DO NOT fasten off.  18 stitches and 1 ch-4 space per side (between your new corners).

Round 14:

Slst into the next ch-4 space.  (Ch 1, sc) in same space – counts as beginning sc.  Sc in same ch-4 space.  Ch 8.  (2 sc) in same ch-4 space as beginning sc.  *Sc in the next 3 stitches – the first should be the slst after your chain and may be partially hidden – don’t accidently miss it.  Hdc in the next stitch, dc in the last 5 stitches before the corner.  (2 dc, tr, ch 1, tr, 2 dc) in the next corner space. Dc in the next 5 stitches, hdc in the next stitch,  sc in the last 3 stitches before your next ch-4 space – the last should be the slst just before your chain.  (2 sc, ch 8, 2 sc) in the next ch-4 space*.   Repeat * to * 3 times, omitting the (2sc, ch 8, 2 sc) on final repeat.  Join with a slst to beginning sc.  Fasten off. 28 stitches and 1 ch-8 space per side.

Round 15:

Join color A with a standing dc in any corner space.  (Dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in the same space as join.  *BPdc around the first 14 stitches.  Ch 1.  Skip the next ch-8, keeping it in front of your work.  BPdc around the last 14 stitches of the side.  (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in the next corner space*.  Repeat * to * 3 more times, omitting corner sequence on final repeat.  Join with a slst to beginning dc.  DO NOT fasten off.  32 stitches and 1 ch-1 space per side.

Round 16:

Slst into the next stitch and into the next corner space.  (Ch 1, sc) in same corner space – counts as beginning sc.  (Ch 2, sc) in same space as beginning sc.  *Sc in the first 3 stitches of side, hdc in the next 13 stitches.  Ch 1, skip the next ch-1 space – be sure to keep your ch-8 from Round 14 in front of your work.  Hdc in the next 13 stitches, sc in the last 3 stitches of side.  (Sc, ch 2, sc) in the next corner space*.  Repeat * to * 3 more times, omitting corner sequence on final repeat.  Join with a slst to beginning sc and fasten off.  34 stitches and a ch-1 space per side.

Round 17:

Join color D with a standing hdc in any corner space. (Ch 2, hdc) in same space as join.  *Skip the first ‘hidden’ stitch, hdc in the next 7 stitches,  sc in the next 8 stitches.  Skip the last stitch before the ch-1 space.  Pull your ch-8 from Round 14 through the ch-2 corner space from Round 12 – Jacob’s ladder style - do not twist this time.  (3 sc) through the ch-8 from Round 12 and the ch-1 from Round 16 together.  Skip the next 2 stitches – the first one after the ch-1 space may be slightly hidden.  Sc in the next 8 stitches, hdc in the last 7 stitches.  (Hdc, ch 2, hdc) in the next corner space*.  Repeat * to * 3 more times, omitting corner sequence on final repeat.  Join with a slst to beginning hdc.  Fasten off. 35 stitches per side.

Round 18:

Join color E with a standing hdc in any corner space.  (Ch 2, hdc) in same space as join. *Hdc in the 3^rd loop of the first 13 stitches, sc in the 3^rd loop of the next 3 stitches.  BPsc around the next 3 scs – these should be the scs made through your ch-8. Sc in the 3^rd loop of the next 3 stitches, hdc in the 3^rd loop of the last 13 stitches.  (Hdc, ch 2, hdc) in the next corner space*.  Repeat * to * 3 more times, omitting corner sequence on final repeat.  Join with a slst to beginning hdc.  Fasten off. 37 stitches per side.

You may want to measure your square at this point.  If you crochet tightly, you may need to increase the next round to hdcs rather than scs.

Round 19:

Join color A with a standing sc in any corner space.  (Ch 2, sc) in the same space as join. *Sc in the 3^rd loop of each stitch across.  (Sc, ch 2, sc) in the next corner space*.  Repeat * to * 3 more times, omitting corner sequence on final repeat.  Join with a slst to beginning sc.  Fasten off.  39 stitches per side.
