Arthur

Arthur

Fantasy, chivalry, romance, and history - all words associated with the Legends of King Arthur.  So fabled and enduring are these legends, that many of the names and places associated with them are easily recognizable with no explanation needed.

This is the second square in a series inspired by these legends and pays tribute to the once and future king himself.  Watch for additional designs in the series to be released over the next several months.

NOTE: This square is intermediate to advanced and due to the density of the center portion will likely require blocking.

Special thanks to the following Ravelers for their time and help testing:

Round 14:

Note – in this round, the stitch count before and after your ch-2 spaces on each side will not be equal.  Trust the pattern – this is done intentionally to correct the drift that naturally occurs in crochet.  By doing this, your corner points from Round 11 will lay straighter when we pin them down in the next round.

Join color E/1 with a standing hdc in the first of any 5-hdc worked into a ch-space in the prior round. Hdc in the next 2 stitches, *ch 2, skip the next stitch, hdc in the next  3, dc in the next 6, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the next corner space, dc in the next 6, hdc in the next 5.*  Repeat *to * 3 more times, omitting last 3 hdcs on final repeat.  Join with a slst beginning hdc and fasten off.  24 stitches and 1 ch-2 space per side

NOTE: in this round you will be making cross stitches – this involves working in front of the stitch just made and into a stitch just skipped.  You may find it is easier to access in these skipped stitches if you insert your hook from the back to the front when working in them (see photo below).

Join color A/6 With a standing dc in any corner space.  (Dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the same space.  *Skip the first ‘hidden’ stitch, skip the next stitch, dc in the next stitch, working in front of the dc you just made - dc in the stitch just skipped – first cross stitch made.  [Skip 1 stitch, dc in the next stitch, working in front of the dc you just made – dc in the skipped stitch] 5 times.  Ch 1. (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the next corner space. *  Repeat * to * 3 more times, omitting corner sequence on final repeat.  Join with a slst to beginning dc and fasten off - or alternately use an invisible join as we will be back posting in the next round.  29 stitches per side plus 2 ch-1 spaces.

Round 18:

Join color B/3 with a standing hdc in any corner space.  (Hdc, ch 2, 2 hdc) in the same space.  *Skip the first ‘hidden’ stitch of the side, hdc in each stitch across.  (2 hdc, ch 2, 2 hdc) in next corner space.*  Repeat * to * 3 more times, omitting corner sequence on final repeat.  Join with a slst to beginning hdc and fasten off. 40 stitches per side.
