Morgana
Morgana
Morgana, also known as Morgan Le Fay, or Morgan the Fairy, is a powerful enchantress and witch in the King Arthur legends. Through the ages, Morgana’s character has oscillated between good and evil, however more recent versions of the tales tend to paint her as an antagonist to King Arthur. She is perhaps most famous for her Vale of No Return, the magical domain where she lures and imprisons unfaithful lovers. Though she is typically depicted as Arthur’s adversary, it is Morgana in the end who accompanies Arthur to the magical Island of Avalon - a final redemptive act.
This is the 5th pattern in a series of squares inspired by The Legends of King Arthur. Watch for additional designs to be released in the coming months!
Please be warned - this pattern, like the legends themselves, is not for the faint of heart! It requires an INTERMEDIATE TO ADVANCED skill level.

slst – slip stitch FPdc – front post double crochet
sc – single crochet BPdc – back post double crochet

For reference ease, special stitches are defined in the rounds they are used in.
Beginning Loop:
With color A/1, ch 4. Join with a slst to beginning ch – beginning loop made.
Round 1:
Special Stitch – Extra Large Extended mini puff – XLxmp – yo, insert hook into indicated stitch or space, pull up a loop – 3 LOOPS ON HOOK. Yo, insert hook into same indicated stitch or space, pull up a loop – 5 LOOP ON HOOK. Yo, pull through 3 loops, [yo pull through 2 loops] twice. You will use this stitch over the next couple rounds.
Ch 2 – does not count as stitch – for traveling purposes only. [XLxmp in beginning loop, ch 2] 6 times. Join with a slst to beginning xmp and fasten off. 6 XLxmp and 6 ch-2 spaces.
Round 2:
Special Stitch – 2 Double Crochet Cluster – 2dc clstr - Yo and insert hook into indicated stitch or space - pull up a loop. Yo and pull through 2 loops – 2 LOOPS ON HOOK. Yo and insert hook into same stitch or space – pull up a loop. Yo and pull through 2 loops – 3 LOOPS ON HOOK. Yo and pull through all 3 loops.
Join color B/2 with a standing 2dc clstr in any ch-2 space. (Ch 1, 2dc clstr) in the same space. [Ch 3, skip the next stitch, (2dc clstr, ch 1, 2dc clstr) in the next ch-2 space] 5 times. Ch 3, join with a slst to beginning 2dc clstr and fasten off. 12 clstrs, 6 ch-1 spaces and 6 ch-3 spaces.
Round 3:
Special Stitch – Popcorn – pop – Work 5 dc in indicated stitch. Drop the loop from your hook and insert hook from front to back in the first stitch of group. Pick up the dropped loop and pull through stitch. Close with a ch 1. Closing chain does not count as a stitch.
Join color C/3 with a standing sc in the first dc clstr worked of any 2dc clstr set. *Sc in the next ch-1 sp, sc in the next 2dc clstr. Ch 2, pop in the next space, ch 2, sc in the next 2dc clstr.* Repeat * to * 5 more times, omitting last sc on final repeat. Join with a slst to beginning sc and fasten off. 18 sc, 12 ch-2 spaces and 6 pop.
Round 4:
In this round you will be skipping all the traveling ch-2s before and after the popcorns. Work in front of them, not over them.
Recommended – locate the XLxmp from Round 1 that has the beginning ch-2 next to it. This will appear slightly thicker than the other XLxmps. In order to hide the traveling ch-2, begin Round 4 one popcorn to the right of the ch-2/XLxmp, and work your front post stitches around the ch-2 and XLxmp together when you come to them (see photo below – blue circle shows XLxmp with ch-2 next to it – join is being made one popcorn to the right of this stitch).
Join color D/4 with a FPdc around recommended popcorn – see note above. (Ch 2, FPdc) around the same popcorn.*Dropping to Round 2 – FPdc around the next 2dc clstr, skip the Round 3 stitch directly behind the stitch just made, (dc, ch 2, dc) in the next stitch, FPdc around the next 2dc clstr from Round 2, skip the Round 3 stitch directly behind the stitch just made. Dropping to Round 1 - FPtr around the skipped XLxmp directly below the next popcorn. Returning to Round 3 – (FPdc, ch 2, FPdc) around the popcorn. Dropping to Round 1 again – FPtr around the same skipped XLxmp you just worked around. Working in Round 2 – FPdc around the next 2dc clstr, skip the Round 3 stitch directly behind the stitch just made, (dc, ch 2, dc) in the next stitch, FPdc around the next 2dc clstr from Round 2, skip the Round 3 stitch directly behind the stitch just made. (FPdc, ch 2, FPdc) around the next popcorn.* Repeat * to * 2 more times, omitting the last (FPdc, ch 2, FPdc) on final repeat. Join with a slst to beginning FPdc and fasten off. 24 FPdc, 6 FPtr, 12 dc, and 12 ch-2 spaces.
Round 5:
In this round we will be working in the ch-2 spaces from the prior round only and skipping all other stitches. You should have a total of 12 ch-2 spaces.
Join color E/5 with a standing dc in any ch-2 space. (Ch 1, dc, ch 1, dc, ch 1, dc) in the same space – shell made. [(dc, ch 1, dc, ch 1, dc, ch 1, dc) in the next space] 11 times. Join with a slst to beginning dc and fasten off. 12 shells.
Round 6:
This is one of the trickiest rounds in the pattern, though it really isn’t difficult if you just take it step by step and pay close attention to where you are placing your stitches. See photo sequence for assistance.
Special stitch – Front Post Triple 2 Together - FPtr 2tog – Yo twice. Insert hook from front to back to front around the post of the first indicated stitch and draw up a loop. [Yo , pull through 2 loops] twice – 2 LOOPS ON HOOK. Yo twice. Insert hook from front to back to front around the post of the last indicated stitch and draw up a loop. [Yo , pull through 2 loops] twice – 3 LOOPS ON HOOK. Yo and draw through all 3 loops.
In this round you will be working in front of, not over your other round stitches. In Round 4 we worked 3 sets of FPtrs around the XLxmps from Round 1, one on each side of a popcorn (see photo) – locate one of these sets – join color F/4 with a standing FPtr 2tog around the Round 4 FPtr to the right of the popcorn and around the FPtr to the left popcorn. *Returning to Round 5 – skip the center space of the shell located directly behind the FPtr 2tog, sc in the BLO of the next 6 stitches and ch-1 spaces. Dropping to Round 4 again – FPtr around the same Round 4 FPtr you just worked the 2nd leg of the FPtr 2tog around. Returning to Round 5 – skip the center space of the shell directly behind the FPtr just made, sc in the BLO of the next 6 stitches and ch-1 spaces. Returning to Round 4, you should have 2 FPdcs worked around clstr stitches, one on each side of the popcorn – FPtr 2tog around the FPdc to the right of the popcorn and the FPdc to the left of the popcorn. Returning to Round 5 – skip the center space of the shell directly behind the FPtr 2tog just made, sc in the BLO of the next 6 stitches and ch-1 spaces. Dropping to Round 4 again – FPtr around the Round 4 FPtr to the right of the next popcorn. Returning to Round 5 – skip the center space of the shell directly behind the FPtr just made, sc in the BLO of the next 6 stitches and ch-1 spaces. Returning to Round 4, you should have 2 FPtrs worked around your Round 1 XLxmp, one on each side of the next popcorn, the first will already contain a FPtr - FPtr 2tog around the Round 4 FPtr to the right of the popcorn and around the FPtr to the left of the popcorn.* Repeat * to * 2 more times, omitting the last FPtr 2tog on final repeat. Join with a slst to beginning FPtr 2tog and fasten off. 72 sc, 6 FPtr 2tog, and 6 FPtr.
Round 7:
You should have 6 skipped FLOs from Round 5 between each of your FPtrs/FPtr 2togs. In this round we will be working in these skipped FLOs only and skipping all Round 6 stitches. When working in these FLOs, you will be working in front of, not over, your Round 6 stitches.
Join color G/6 with a standing dc in the first skipped FLO to the left of any FPtr or FPtr2tog - for pattern purposes we will be referring to these interchangeably as the next FP stitch – it does not matter which you start or finish next to. Dc in the next FLO, (2 dc) in the next FLO, dc in the next 2 FLO, (2 dc) in the next FLO. [Skip the next FP stitch, dc in the next 2 FLO, (2 dc) in the next FLO, dc in the next 2 FLO, (2 dc) in the next FLO] 11 times. Join with a slst to beginning dc and fasten off. 96 dc.
Round 8:
Special Stitch – FP Dbl Tr 2tog – Yo 3 times. Insert hook from front to back to front around the post of the first indicated stitch and draw up a loop. [Yo , pull through 2 loops] 3 times – 2 LOOPS ON HOOK. Yo 3 times. Insert hook from front to back to front around the post of the last indicated stitch and draw up a loop. [Yo , pull through 2 loops] 3 times – 3 LOOPS ON HOOK. Yo and draw through all 3 loops.
For ease of reference, we will be referring to the FPtr and FPtr 2tog from Round 6 interchangeably as FP stitches again. When working around the FPtr 2togs, work around the entire stitch not each individual leg.
You should have 8 dc worked between each of your Round 6 FP stitches – join color H/4 with a standing sc in the first dc of an 8-dc set between FP stitches. Sc in the next 3 stitches. *Dropping to Round 6 and working in front of, not over your other round stitches - FP Dbl Tr 2tog around the FP stitch that is located 4 stitches to the right and around the FP stitch located 4 stitches to the left. Returning to Round 8 – sc in the next 8 stitches.* Repeat * to * 11 more times, omitting last 4 sc on final repeat. Join with a slst to beginning sc – or alternately join with an invisible join as we will be back posting in the next round. 108 stitches.
You will likely be wavy after the last couple of rounds – this is normal.
Round 9:
Join color B/1 with a standing BPhdc in any sc to the left of a FP dbl tr2tog. BPhdc around the next 7 stitches, [ch 1, skip the next FP dbl tr 2tog, BPhdc around the next 8 stitches] 11 more times. Ch 1, join with a slst to beginning BPhdc. DO NOT fasten off. 96 BPhdc and 12 ch-1 spaces.
Round 10:
Special Stitch – Extended mini puff - xmp – insert hook into indicated stitch or space, pull up a loop – 2 LOOPS ON HOOK. Yo, insert hook into same indicated stitch or space, pull up a loop – 4 LOOP ON HOOK. Yo, pull through 3 loops, yo pull through last 2 loops.
Ch 2 – counts as first hdc. Hdc in the next stitch, xmp in the next 4 stitches, hdc in the next 2 stitches. [skip the next ch-1 space, hdc in the next 2 stitches - being careful not to miss the first hidden stitch, xmp in the next 4 stitches, hdc in the next 2 stitches] 11 times. Skip the last ch-1 space, join with a slst in the 2nd ch of the beginning ch-2. Fasten off. 96 stitches.
Round 11:
Special Stitch – 3 dc Popcorn – 3dc pop – Work 3 dc in indicated stitch. Drop the loop from your hook and insert hook from front to back in the first stitch of group. Pick up the dropped loop and pull through stitch. Close with a ch 1. Closing chain does not count as a stitch.
When making your popcorns in this round, do not make your closing chains too tight as you will be working your corners into some of them in the next round.
You should have 8 stitches between each skipped ch-1 space - join color I/2 with a standing sc in the second stitch of an 8-stitch set – so your popcorns don’t slant too much. Sc in the next 7 stitches. [Dropping down to Round 8 – 3dc pop in the skipped FP dbl tr2tog. Returning to Round 10 – sc in the next 8 stitches] 11 times. Dropping down to Round 8 – 3dc pop in the last skipped FP dbl tr 2tog. Join with a slst to beginning sc and fasten off, or alternatively use an invisible join as we will be back posting in the next round. 96 sc and 12 pop.
Round 12:
Special Instruction – Shallow Post Stitches - For a more even look, work your back post stitches ‘shallow’ in this and future rounds, or at the very top of your stitches, just under the front and back loops and above the 3rd loop of your stitches rather than dropping beneath the 3rd loop and working around the post itself (see photo below – hook entering stitch from back to front above the 3rd loop and arrow is showing where hook will exit from front to back above 3rd loop to complete the stitch. Photo from different pattern).
Note – when working in your Round 11 popcorns, work in the closing chain at the top of the popcorn.
Special Stitch – 2 Triple Cluster – 2tr clstr – Yo twice and instert hook into indicated stitch or space- pull up a loop. [Yo and pull through 2 loops] twice – 2 LOOPS ON HOOK. Yo twice and insert hook into same stitch or space – pull up a loop. [Yo and pull through 2 loops] twice – 3 LOOPS ON HOOK. Yo and pull through all 3 loops.
Join color E/3 with a standing BPdc 2 stitches before a pop. *Skip the next stitch, (2dc clstr, ch 2, 2tr clstr, ch 2, 2tr clstr, ch 2, 2dc clstr) in the next pop – corner made. Skip the next stitch, BPdc in the next 2 stitches, BPhdc in the next 5 stitches, FPsc around the popcorn, BPsc in the next 8 stitches, FPsc around the next popcorn, BPhdc in the next 5 stitches, BPdc in the next 2 stitches.* Repeat * to * 3 more times, omitting last dc on final repeat. Join with a slst in beginning dc. DO NOT fasten off. 28 stitches and 2 ch-2 spaces per side.
Round 13:
Ch 3 – counts as first dc. *[Skip the next clstr, (2dc clstr, ch 2, 2dc clstr) in the next ch-2 space, ch 2] twice. Skip the next clstr, (2dc clstr, ch 2, 2dc clstr) in the next ch-2 space. Skip the next clstr, dc in the next 3 stitches, hdc in the next 5 stitches, sc in the next 8 stitches, hdc in the next 5 stitches, dc in the next 3 stitches.* Repeat * to * 3 more times, omitting last dc on final repeat. Join with a slst to 3rd ch of beginning ch-3 and fasten off. 30 stitches and 4 ch-2 spaces per side.
Round 14:
Join color C/5 with a standing sc in any center corner space. (Ch 2, sc) in the same space. *[FPsc around the next 2dc clstr, sc in the next ch-2 space] twice. FPsc around the next 2dc clstr, sc in the next 24 stitches, [FPsc around the next 2dc clstr, sc in the next ch-2 sp] 2 times. FPsc around the next 2dc clstr, (sc, ch 2, sc) in the next corner space.* Repeat * to * 3 more times, omitting corner sequence on final repeat. Join with a slst to beginning sc – or alternatively, use an invisible join as we will be back posting in the next round. Fasten off. 36 stitches per side.
Round 15:
Join color F/6 with a standing hdc in any corner space. (Ch 2, hdc) in the same space. *BPhdc in each stitch across side, (hdc, ch 2, hdc) in the next corner space.* Repeat * to * 3 more times, omitting corner sequence on final repeat. Join with a slst to beginning hdc.
