Percival

Percival

Percival is a fascinating character in the Legends of King Arthur!  Many scholars believe that Percival dates back to early Welsh Arthurian traditions where he may have been called Peredur, meaning 'hard-steel spear.' Either way, Percival is certainly a knight who had a true calling on his life.  Likely of noble birth, Percival's mother hides him away in the forest after the death of his father. Here, she attempts to protect him from all the ways of man, but at last it was not to be!  One day, a group of knights travels through the woods and when Percival sees them he is enamored.  He soon heads off to become a knight in King Arthur's court, thereby fulfilling his destiny.  Notably, Percival becomes one of just two knights to join Galahad in his successful pursuit of the Grail - a worthy accomplishment indeed!

This square is the 6th in a series of squares inspired by the Legends of King Arthur.  Like the tales themselves, this pattern is not for the faint of heart.  It requires INTERMEDIATE to ADVANCED level skill.

Huge thanks to the following Ravelry members for testing this square.

For reference ease, special stitches are defined in the rounds they are used in.

Beginning Loop:

With color A/1, ch 4.  Join with a slst to beginning ch – beginning loop made.

Round 1:

Ch 3 – counts as beginning dc.  (15 dc) in beginning loop.  Join with a slst to 3rd ch of beginning ch-3 and fasten off.  16 dc.

Round 2:

Special Instruction – Shallow Post Stitches - For a more even look, work your back post stitches ‘shallow’ in this and future rounds, or at the very top of your stitches, just under the front and back loops and above the 3rd loop of your stitches rather than dropping beneath the 3rd loop and working around the post itself (see photo above – hook entering stitch from back to front above the 3rd loop and arrow is showing where hook will exit from front to back above 3rd loop to complete the stitch.  Photo from different pattern).

Join color B/2 with a standing BPsc around the 3rd stitch before the Round 1 join. BPsc around the next stitch,*(Hdc, dc, tr) in the next stitch, ch 3, (tr, dc, hdc) in the next stitch – shell made. BPsc around the next 2 stithes.*  Repeat * to * 3 more times, omitting last 2 BPsc on final repeat.  Join with a slst to beginning BPsc and fasten off.  8 tr, 8 dc, 8 hdc, 8 BPsc and 4 ch-3 spaces.

Round 3:

You should have a set of 2 FPscs between each shell – in this round you will be working into these FPscs only and skipping all the trs, dcs, hdcs, and ch-3 spaces that make up the shells.

Special Stitch – Extra Large Extended mini puff – XLxmp – yo, insert hook into indicated stitch or space, pull up a loop – 3 LOOPS ON HOOK.  Yo, insert hook into same indicated stitch or space, pull up a loop – 5 LOOP ON HOOK.  Yo, pull through 3 loops, [yo, pull through 2 loops] twice.

Join color C/3 with a standing dc in the 1st BPsc of any 2-BPsc set. (Dc, XLxmp) in the same stitch.  (XLxmp, 2 dc) in the next stitch.  [Ch 3, pull your chain behind the next shell, (2 dc, XLxmp) in the next stich, (XLxmp, 2 dc) in the next stitch] 3 times.  Ch 3, pull chain behind the next shell, join with a slst to beginning standing dc and fasten off.  8 XLxmp, 16 dc, and 4 ch-3 spaces.

Round 4:

Special Stitch – Small Puff – sm puff - Insert your hook into the indicated stitch.  Pull up a loop – 2 LOOPS ON HOOK.  Yo and insert hook into same stitch.  Pull up a loop – 4 LOOPS ON HOOK.  Yo and insert hook into same stitch.  Pull up a loop – 6 LOOPS ON HOOK.   YO and pull through all 6 loops.  Close stitch with a chain. Closing chain does not count as a stitch for pattern purposes.  Don’t make these too tight as you will be working into them in the next round.

Special Stitch – 2 Double Crochet Cluster – 2dc clstr -  Yo and insert hook into indicated stitch or space - pull up a loop.  Yo and pull through 2 loops – 2 LOOPS ON HOOK.  Yo and insert hook into same stitch or space – pull up a loop.  Yo and pull through 2 loops – 3 LOOPS ON HOOK.  Yo and pull through all 3 loops.

Join color B/2 with a standing sc in the first dc after a ch-3 space, *sm puff in the next stitch, sc in the next stitch, sm puff between the stitch just worked in and the next stitch, sc in the next stitch – which will be slightly hidden by the puff just made, sm puff in the next stitch, sc in the next stitch.  Ch 3, (2dc clstr, ch 3, 2dc clstr) in the ch-3 space, ch 3 – clstr shell made.  Sc in the first stitch after the space just worked in.*  Repeat * to * 3 more times, omitting the last sc on final repeat.  Join with a slst to beginning sc and fasten off.  12 puffs, 16 sc, 8 2dc clstrs, and 12 ch-3 spaces.

Round 5:

Special Stitch – Extra Large Extended mini puff – XLxmp – yo, insert hook into indicated stitch or space, pull up a loop – 3 LOOPS ON HOOK.  Yo, insert hook into same indicated stitch or space, pull up a loop – 5 LOOP ON HOOK.  Yo, pull through 3 loops, [yo, pull through 2 loops] twice.

When looking at your puff stitches, you should have a space before the puff that appears like a stitch, and a closing chain on top of the puff that appears like a stitch – see photo above – needle is going through space before puff and stitch marker is going through closing chain on top of puff (colors don’t necessarily match round color).  We will be treating both of these as stitches during this round.

Join color D/4 with a standing dc in the first stitch after the last ch-3 of a clstr shell.  Dc in the same stitch as join.  *Dc in the next stitch, XLxmp in the next 6 stitches, dc in the next stitch, (2 dc) in the next stitch.  Ch 3, skip the next clstr shell and pull your chain behind these stitches, (2 dc) in the first stitch following the clstr shell.*   Repeat * to * 3 more times, omitting last 2 dc on final repeat.  Join with a slst to beginning dc and fasten off.  24 dc, 24 XLxmp, and 4 ch-3 spaces.

At the end of round 5, you will thread your clstr shells from Round 4 through the ch-3 spaces of your shells from Round 2, Jacob’s Ladder style.  Pull them so that your clusters come completely through the ch-space – see photos below.

 Round 6:

Join color B/2 with a standing sc in the first dc after a ch-3 space. Sc in the next stitch, *[sm puff in the next stitch, sc in the next stitch] twice.  You worked 3 sm puff stitches in Round 4, dropping to the middle puff from this round, which should be directly below your next stitch FPdc around the middle puff from Round 4. Returning to Round 5 – [sc in the next stitch, sm puff in the next stitch] twice.  Sc in the next 2 stitches.  Ch 3, (2dc clstr, ch 2, 2dc clstr) in the ch-3 space, ch 3 – clstr shell made. Sc in the next 2 stitches.*  Repeat * to * 3 more times, omitting last 2 sc on final repeat.  Join with a slst to beginning sc and fasten off.  32 sc, 16 puffs, 4 FPdc, 8 2dc clstrs, 4 ch-2 spaces and 8 ch-3 spaces.

Round 7:

When looking at your puff stitches, you should have a space before the puff that appears like a stitch, and a closing chain on top that appears like a stitch.  We will be treating both of these as stitches during this round – just like we did in Round 5.

Join color E/5 with a standing dc in the first stitch after the last ch-3 of a clstr shell. Dc in the next 4 stitches, *(dc, ch 1, dc) in the next stitch – corner point made, dc in the next 5 stitches, (dc, ch 1, dc) in the next stitch – corner point made, dc in the next 5 stitches.  Skip the next clstr shell – dc in the next 5 stitches.*
Repeat * to * 3 more times, omitting last 5 dc on final repeat.  Join with a slst to beginning dc and fasten off.  76 dc and 8 ch-1.

At the end of Round 7, you will thread your clstr shells from Round 6 through the ch-3 spaces of your clstr shells from Round 4, Jacob’s Ladder style.  Pull them so that your clusters come all the way through the ch-space – see before and after in photos below.

Round 8:

Note: in the prior round we skipped our clstr shells, thereby creating a sort of ‘gap’ behind them – see photo – stitch marker shows ‘gap’.  We will be working into this gap in this round and simply referring to it as the Round 7 gap. Before starting this round, make sure all your side cluster stitches are woven together as we will secure them in this round.

At each ‘corner’ we created 2 corner points - Join color B/2 with a standing sc in the ch-1 space of the first corner point after any clstr shell.  (Ch 1, sc) in the same space, *sc in the next 3 stitches.  Dropping to Round 6 – FPtr around the Round 6 FPdc.  Returning to Round 7 – skip the next stitch, sc in the next 3 stitches, (sc, ch 1, sc) in the next ch-1 space, sc in the next 4 stitches. Skip the next 2 stitches.  Working in the Round 6 ch-2 space – between clusters and the Round 7 gap directly behind it together – (dc, ch 1, XLxmp, ch 1, XLxmp, ch 1, dc) – side shell madeReturning to Round 7 – skip the next 2 stitches – the first will be hidden - sc in the next 4 stitches, (sc, ch 1, sc) in the next ch-1 space.*  Repeat * to * 3 more times, omitting last (sc, ch 1, sc) on final repeat.  Join with a slst to beginning sc and fasten off, or alternatively, use an invisible join as we will be back posting in the next round. 72 sc, 4 FPtr, 8 dc, 8 XLxmp, and 20 ch-1 spaces.

Round 9:

Remember to work your post stitches shallow in this round too, except when working around the posts of the shells.

In Round 8 we made ch-1 spaces between the stitches of our side shells, and ch-1 spaces at our corner points - Join color A/3 with a standing dc in the ch-1 space of a corner point following any shell.  (Ch 1, dc) in the same space.  *BPdc around the next 3 stitches, skip the next stitch, (FPdc, ch 2, FPdc) around the next FPtr corner made.  Skip the next stitch, BPdc around the next 3 stitches, (dc, ch 1, dc) in the next ch-1 space, BPdc around the next 4 stitches, ch 3, skip the next stitch, BPsc around the first stitch of the shell.  [Ch 1, skip the ch-1 space, BPsc around the next stitch] 3 times.  Ch 3, skip the next stitch, BPdc around the next 4 stitches.  (Dc, ch 1, dc) in the next ch-1 space.* Repeat * to * 3 more times omitting last (dc, ch 1, dc) on final repeat.  Join with a slst to beginning BPdc and fasten off.   24 stitches, 5 ch-1 spaces, and 2 ch-3s per side.

Don’t worry if you are a bit wavy at this point – the stitches will tighten up in the next few of rounds.

Round 10:

Special Stitch – Extended Triple Cluster – Ex trclstr - yo 2 times, insert hook into first indicated stitch/space and pull up a loop.  [Yo, pull through 2 loops] twice – 2 LOOPS ON HOOK.  Yo 2 times, insert hook into same stitch/space and pull up a loop.  [Yo, pull through 2 loops] twice – 3 LOOPS ON HOOK.  Yo 2 times, insert hook into same stitch/space and pull up a loop.  [Yo, pull through 2 loops] twice – 4 LOOPS ON HOOK.  Yo, pull through 2 loops, yo, pull through last 3 loops.
